Explanation:
Passwords can be created for groups. If a user account references a file that is owned by a group that the user account is not a member of then the user is requested to enter the group password for the group.
User accounts that are a member of the group are not requested to enter a password. Passwords are encrypted within the /etc/group file but however are rarely used.
